I have always had an interest in getting fit.  I think most people feel the same, but like most, I made several attempts over the years failing to stick with it more than a few months.  In 2011, I decided to give it another shot. My lack of discipline in previous years made me realized I needed to create a structured routine.  My first plan was to find a trainer.  I figured if I was going to succeed, I needed to speak with an expert.  I wanted a scheduled diet and workout routine written out in black and white.  I hired Eddie Woodward and joined American Family Fitness in November 2011.  I trained all muscle groups 3 times a week and strictly followed my diet.  In January 2012, Eddie mentioned a competition coming up in April called Max Muscle.  He said with continued hard work, he could get me ready to compete in Men’s Physique.  I had never done anything like that before so I was excited to say the least.  April 28th 2012, I stepped on stage in the Woodbridge High School Auditorium and took first place in Men’s Physique at the 2012 NPC Max Muscle competition.  It was an amazing experience and very rewarding journey.  In 2012, I competed in 2 more NPC shows placing in the top three of my class.

I am getting ready for the 2013 NPC Max Muscle show on April 20th.  I am training on my own with some help from Eddie.  I think it is always a good idea to have an expert help you and a support system of goal oriented individuals cheering you on.

Like all things rewarding, training for a competition is also not easy.  The hardest part is the diet, but it is equally influential to the body’s transformation.  A scheduled diet hanging on the fridge and preparing my meals ahead of time was key to my follow through.

I continue to train at American Family Fitness 6 days a week providing enough recovery time for each muscle group.  I always enjoy upper body, particularly shoulders.  Leg day on the other hand is my least favorite…nothing more exhausting than squats or leg press.

One thing that stands out most about fitness competitors and trainers is their willingness to help others.  Fitness has a positive effect on your body, you just feel better and that completely changes your mental health.  This translates to higher energy levels, a boost of self confidence and positive outlook on all things that you do, feel and say.

If you are just getting started, talk to an experienced trainer or competitor.  Introduce yourself to others that have been where you want to go.  Everyone likes to tell their story so listen and learn.”
